Apple’s next flagship product iPhone 6S reportedly will come with a redesigned wireless system featuring a Qualcomm MDM9635M LTE chip. It claims to be capable of delivering up to twice the theoretical LTE download speeds and better battery life as compared to the “9X25″ chip of the current iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, according to 9to5Mac.
The chip available in the current generation iPhones is built using 28nm process, but the new Qualcomm chip, also known as the ‘9X35′ Gobi modem platform, is more condensed as it is built using a new 20nm production process.
Qualcomm launched this new chip in 2013 but it only became available in the smartphone market a year ago due to production lag times.
Let’s look at some of its features.
Blazing-Fast Speed
The most significant feature of this new chip is that it can accommodate 300 Mbps download speeds on LTE networks – that’s double the 150 Mbps download speeds offered by current iPhones.
It falls under “Category 6” cellular modems, an upgrade over the “Category 4″ chipset in the current iPhone.
“The Category 6 speeds enabled by the Gobi 9×35 will allow customers to enjoy blazing-fast downloads, snappier application performance due to lower network response time, and run more connectivity based applications smoothly, as well as concurrently,” Qualcomm said to 9to5Mac.
However, the upload speeds are the same at 50Mbps, and real-world performance is likely to be closer to 225Mbps or lower, depending on your cellular network.
Improved Battery Life
According to Qualcomm, the newer processor is more power efficient, so battery life will be better when using LTE networks on the iPhone 6S.
The new Qualcomm chip could offer reduced heat generation as well, that means you don’t need to worry about the heat anymore on intense usage.
Extra Room for Battery
According to 9to5Mac sources, the new iPhone 6S’s motherboard is more compact and a bit narrower as compared to the current generation iPhone’s motherboard. This means there is extra space for a larger battery.
There have been rumors already that the design of the new iPhone 6S would be a bit thicker to accommodate a larger battery. The current news about the additional space for a larger battery backs those rumors.
The Future
According to Qualcomm, this new chip will allow the smartphone manufacturers to “design sleeker devices without sacrificing performance, while at the same time allowing operators to increase their network capacity and efficiency,” which means you can expect the slimmer iPhone in the near future as well.
While faster downloads sound exciting, actual speeds would depend on a number of factors, most importantly the carrier’s network. This is something we’ll have to wait and see.
