We have a bit of a vacuum addiction in our home. I’ve lost count of the different makes and models we’ve owned over the years in some sort of Quixotic quest for the perfect cleaning machine.
I’ve always been a fan of Dyson products, though, and appreciate the engineering innovation that Dyson puts into its machines, so I was excited when Dyson offered me an opportunity to review the DC59 Motorhead cordless vacuum. Here is a bit of the review I wrote about my experience:
The Basics
The Dyson DC59 Motorhead unit is about 8 by 10 inches. With the full extensions in place it’s 48 inches long, and it weighs just under five pounds.
It’s powered by a Dyson digital motor V6 providing 350W of power. It uses 28 airwatts in Standard mode, and 100 airwatts in Boost mode, to fill a 0.12 gallon bin. Out of the box, it comes with a variety of tools and attachments to let you get into just about any crack or crevice.
What separates the Motorhead from Dyson’s DC59 Animal model is that it has a direct drive motor located inside the brush bar. Placing the motor in the brush bar provides better balance and weight distribution, and also enables the vacuum to deliver more power where it counts, resulting in 75 percent more power than the DC59 Animal.
The Good
For starters, I like the modular design. There are three elements involved in the full-length unit: the base unit with the bin, the extension tube, and the brush bar. It is exceptionally easy to attach and detach different elements, though, so you can remove the extension tube and attach the brush bar directly to the base unit, or swap out the brush bar for the crevice tool…
