Smaller iPhone 6C may join the iPhone lineup this fall

Reports coming out of China suggest Apple’s September release date will involve the release of not two iPhone devices as previously thought but three new versions to the public. The first two are almost certainly updates of the existing iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus but the third is a mystery.

According to DigiTimes, the new models of the existing smartphones will be the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus, and the third iPhone device will be the iPhone 6C. DigiTimes reports that the iPhone 6C will sport a 4-inch screen—finally offering fans of the smaller iPhone 5S an iPhone 6 model they can love.

Apple of course has not confirmed or substantiated these reports. Even if there is no iPhone 6C, though, Apple may still have something in store for its loyal fan base. There is speculation that Apple may make the iPhone 5S available for free on a two-year contract through the major wireless carriers once the new models are released.

Earlier this year Apple CEO Tim Cook claimed the size and features of the iPhone 6 are the driving force behind its success in attracting first-time iPhone users including some hardcore Android fans. A 4-inch iPhone 6C might also attract new customers who aren’t impressed with the supersized displays of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, or convince loyal iPhone users who prefer the original smaller sizes to upgrade.

The phantom iPhone 6C is rumored to fall into a $400-$500 price bracket without carrier contract subsidies. A cheaper iPhone 6 model may help Apple as it continues to woo emerging markets in Africa, Latin America and Asia previously did with the plastic iPhone 5c versions. Based on iPhone 5c sales numbers the proposed iPhone 6C may sell 10 to 20 million units in its first year.
