Google Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X: What you need to know

Google held a media event this morning and unveiled the highly-anticipated Nexus 6P. The Huawei-built Nexus 6P will be the new Android flagship device, accompanied by the LG-built Nexus 5X smartphone as well.

The Nexus 6P runs on a 1.9GHz octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor. It has a 12-megapixel rear camera with laser autofocus and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. The Nexus 6P comes with 3GB of RAM and will be available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB storage options. The 5.7 inch 1440p display is actually a bit smaller than its predecessor, the Nexus 6. Google touted the “aeronautical-grade” aluminum case of the Nexus 6P. The flagship Android smartphone will come in either aluminum, graphite, or “frost white” colors.

One of the distinctive features of the Nexus 6P is the new Nexus Imprint fingerprint sensor. Google claims the fingerprint sensor can authenticate and open the device in a mere 600 milliseconds—and that it can get even more accurate as it learns about your fingerprint over time. The Nexus Imprint fingerprint sensor will also facilitate Android Pay transactions just as Touch ID on the iPhone enables Apple Pay transacations.

The Nexus 5X is a somewhat smaller and less powerful device. It has a 5.2-inch 1080p display with a pixel density of 423ppi. The Nexus 5X has a 1.8GHz hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor with 2GB of RAM. It has a 12.3-megapixel rear camera with laser autofocus and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The Nexus 5X has a plastic body available in white, black, or light blue, and only comes in 16GB and 32GB models.

Both devices will come with the latest and greatest Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

The Google Nexus 6P will be available for pre-order from Google’s online store starting today in the US, UK, Ireland and Japan. The Nexus 6P will start at $499 for the 32GB model and will be start shipping in October. The cost of the device is also offset some by a free 90-day subscription to Google Play Music and a $50 Google Play credit. The Nexus 5X starts at $379. It is also available for pre-order starting today with shipment beginning in October and comes with the $50 Google Play store credit.
