Samsung and Blackdove are teaming up on a Kickstarter project that could change the way you decorate your home. The Blackdove Digital Canvas can continually transform the walls of your home to reflect changing moods or styles with hundreds of original works by digital artists from around the world. Blackdove launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the initial production of the Digital Canvas.
Samsung’s role in this venture is to supply the display hardware that hangs on the wall and runs the embedded Blackdove software. The Blackdove Digital Canvas will be available in either a 48-inch or 55-inch Samsung HD display. You can mount the display on the wall in either portrait or landscape orientation—which will also have an impact on which digital art pieces you can display correctly.
You also have to buy the art. Blackdove has a mobile app for iOS and Android that allows you to browse the available pieces from a catalog of over 400 works. You can purchase the digital art you like through the app and then press “play” to display it on the Blackdove Digital Canvas on your wall. The art you purchase is stored locally on the Samsung hardware. You can set the Digital Canvas to automatically rotate your collection of art, or just manually change it to fit the mood or ambiance you want in the room.
The Blackdove Digital Canvas is still a Samsung HD display as well. It has three HDMI ports that allow you to connect a cable TV box, DVD player, gaming console or other entertainment source so the device can pull double duty as a television when necessary, and a living digital canvas when it’s not otherwise being used.
I’m not much of an interior decorator. More precisely, I just don’t have any vision for such things. If it weren’t for my wife we’d have a much more Spartan, plain vanilla home. I do, however, appreciate good design and interior decorating. The Kickstarter video for this looks pretty amazing.
“Blackdove’s mission is to raise awareness and appreciation of digital art and provide a platform that enhances the digital art experience for both artists and collectors,” said Marc Billings, CEO of Blackdove. “Through our partnership with Samsung and shared commitment to innovation, we are able to deliver on our goal and provide art enthusiasts, gallery owners, interior designers and commercial developers with an out-of-the-box, robust, high-quality solution for displaying art work.”
The whole concept reminds of the sort of thing you see in futuristic science fiction worlds like Star Trek, or Total Recall, or Minority Report. I guess the future is now. The price for the Blackdove Digital Canvas is $999 for the 48-inch display and $1,499 for the 55-inch model. Special discounts and package pricing applies for Kickstarter backers.
