Let’s take a closer look at the Hannshow 8.2-inch rear entertainment screen for the Tesla Model Y/3 and my experience with the device and the company.
While I had high hopes for this product, it went downhill very quickly. I originally had a rear entertainment screen from TSportsLine, which I liked but didn’t like because it required you to use a cell phone hotspot, so I burned through that limited data. Plus, I had to manually connect every single time.
I came across Hannshow’s screen that claims to have 4G SIM Support. I was so happy I could put in a dedicated SIM card so it’s always online and with unlimited data.
I reached out to Hannshow see if they wanted to work together at all. They were interested in possibly working in the future but wanted me to give you guys a dedicated link so they can get some sales before I would even be able to review anything as a trade for possibly working together in the future.
I said, “No.”
I’m not going to advertise them without reviewing something first. So I paid full price and ordered the rear entertainment and climate control touch screen. Well that’s where I went wrong.
I got it installed, put in a SIM card, and had no connection. I talked to their customer support, which uses WhatsApp. They fixated the entire time on blaming me rather than taking any responsibility for their product.
They sent me a firmware update, which I put on a USB stick. The screen detected it, and the update would get to 100% and say its restarting but then I would just get a black screen forever. I closed the car door and reopened the door to restart it. The device would work again, but still had the old firmware version.
Hannshow support tried to blame my USB thumb drive. They asked me to try again with a “top-name brand drive.” I am using a Samsung thumb drive. The thumb drive is not the issue.
Then they asked me to try a different carrier. I tried T-Mobile, AT&T, and Boost Mobile. None of them worked.
On top of that sometimes when I’m driving I would look and the screen is just black. Sometimes the thing doesn’t load at all and I have to pull over and get out of the car and back in to restart it. Insanely inconvenient.
After a month or so, they eventually agreed and sent me a replacement. It was obvious when I opened the package that the replacement was used–the box I received had only the main touchscreen display. There was no wiring harness or any of the other components that should have been in the box. Plus, there was a SIM card in the slot from a carrier in China.
I installed the obviously used screen and inserted my T-Mobile SIM, and I was finally able to get a connection–but only on 2G EDGE. It was super slow to the point of being useless. I tried again with the AT&T and Boost SIMs and again had no connection at all. To add insult to injury, I then received an email from T-Mobile stating that I have a device on my account that relies on the 2G Network, which is being shut down soon, so I need to upgrade my device.
I think the issue might be that this device doesn’t operate on a US cellular baseband. If that is true, they need to update their website to indicate this.
I reached out again to them via WhatsApp, and the last response I got was, “We agreed to send you a replacement.”
Since the latest Tesla Spring update, the seat massage function also stopped working, and of course, no response from Hannshow if they are working on an update to restore this functionality.
So I give their product 1 out of 10 and their support a -5 out of 10.
If you value your time and money and your car. Stay far away from this company.
