Citrix promises superior mobile security with XenMobile 10

Citrix announced the latest release of its XenMobile enterprise mobility management (EMM) solution today. XenMobile 10 includes a number of new and enhanced features, including improvements that help customers streamline and manage business workflow. Organizations need an EMM platform like XenMobile 10 to protect sensitive data while enabling users to be productive from mobile devices.

XenMobile is already established as one of the leading EMM platforms. XenMobile 10 includes new integration between the WorxNotes app and Microsoft Exchange that enables users to sync Outlook Notes from their desktops with the WorxNotes app on their mobile devices. The net result is that notes are securely stored and maintained in one place, but can be viewed or retrieved from any PC or mobile device.

Citrix also claims a potential 20 percent reduction in IT help desk calls thanks to a new Self Service Portal that allows users to manage tasks like tracking, locking, and wiping of stolen devices. The result, ostensibly, will be lower IT operations costs, and more productive users.

In a press release announcing XenMobile 10, Citrix proclaims, “XenMobile stands apart from other offerings based on experience, security and flexibility in every aspect of product design and development. This differentiated focus makes it a best for business mobility solution for both employees and IT administrators.”

It’s Citrix, and it’s a Citrix product, though, so you have to take that statement with a grain of salt or three. At the very least, you can’t just take that assertion at face value.

Citrix isn’t the only one praising XenMobile 10. Chris March, principal analyst for enterprise mobile app strategies for 451 Research, said, “With XenMobile, Citrix is going beyond having just a comprehensive EMM solution. Through integrations of its Worx apps and ShareFile service for example, it is able to deliver strong mobile user experiences, which will appeal to companies wanting to invest in mobility to drive greater worker productivity without introducing disparate and fragmented sets of technologies that they might otherwise have to deal with.”

One of the best features of XenMobile is how well it integrates with the infrastructure and applications businesses already depend on. Why is that a big deal? Inertia.

I think XenMobile is a great platform, and I like a lot of what Citrix has to offer, but it doesn’t matter how great XenMobile is if it doesn’t work with the platforms and applications businesses are already invested in, and that users are familiar with. It takes a lot for a company to just throw out what it’s using and start over with a new platform, so it’s better to take the path of least resistance. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

Inertia works against change. Even if a better product or service comes along, it’s very difficult to overcome the inertia of established tools and processes. By integrating with Exchange, Outlook, and other commonly used platforms and applications, Citrix enables customers to continue using the tools they’re comfortable with while also getting the benefits of all that XenMobile has to offer.

I’ve used XenMobile, and the Worx apps in the past, but I haven’t actually used XenMobile 10, or any of the new features, so I can’t vouch for how effective they are (or not). I can say that my experience with Citrix has been generally positive, and I’m confident that XenMobile 10 will live up to the expectations Citrix has laid out.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be XenMobile, but organizations that have BYOD policies allowing employees to use their own personal mobile devices for business, or deploy mobile devices for business purposes need to have some sort of EMM system in place to effectively manage and protect the data on those devices. If your business is looking for an enterprise mobility management (EMM) system, or you already have one that you’re not entirely satisfied with, it will be worth your time to do more research and find out if Citrix XenMobile 10 is right for you.
