Only about a week left until Apple is expected to officially unveil the new iPhone 7 models. As with any Apple news or iPhone event, there has been no shortage of rumors and speculation about what Apple will share with us. We won’t know for sure until September 7, but there are a couple rumors I am pretty sure are true, and I am keeping my fingers crossed.
It’s official. Apple sent out invitations for its media event on September 7—an apropos date for what is expected to be the official unveiling of the new iPhone 7 smartphone models. Somehow, my invitation failed to arrive yet again. What isn’t yet official is what exactly the iPhone 7 will or won’t be, but we do have rumors, speculation, and alleged leaks that strongly suggest a couple things that we can at least hope turn out to be true.
32GB model
Apple raised the high-end of storage for iPhones to 128GB, but inexplicably left the entry-level model at a virtually useless 16GB. The iOS operating system itself occupies some of that space, so you really only have about 12GB to work with right out of the box.
I had a 128GB iPhone 6S, but sold it when my employer offered me an iPhone 6S Plus—which turned out to be the 16GB version. Knowing what I know now, I would not make that switch if I had it to do over again. The 128GB may be a bit of overkill, but 16GB is just dysfunctional.
I don’t have that many apps installed on my iPhone in the first place, but I had to go through and purge some of the less-used apps just to make sure there is some room left to take a photo if I want. Even then, I have to constantly purge photos and videos—and use unsanctioned tricks to force iOS to free up the cached memory Apple alleges is supposed to be freed up automatically when needed—just so I can take pictures.
The rumor—based on recent alleged “leaks”—is that there is definitely a 32GB model of the iPhone 7, but that doesn’t mean there won’t also be a 16GB version. Let me just go on record and state that there absolutely should not be a 16GB version available. The 16GB model should be stricken from all shelves and become a distant memory of our smartphone past.
